Camp Topic Summaries
ROAR! Get ready to party with our favourite prehistoric pals... Explore the habitats and eating patterns of dinosaurs, as well as seeing how their skeletons make them marvels of movement. The children will be introduced to the differences between herbivores, carnivores and omnivores, as well as explore the sophisticated defence techniques of even the smallest of dinosaurs. Your mini Mad Scientists will then have the opportunity to look at some dinosaur teeth up-close and make their very own T-Rex Tooth! They will also re-enact one of the theories of the end of the dinosaurs, using a gloopy mud pool and some extreme weather conditions...
Take cover!! The Mad Science meteorology lab is going extreme! In this whirlwind tour of the world’s wild and wonderful extreme weather phenomena, the children will get tough with tornados, delve into the detail of droughts, be witness to theatrical thunderstorms, get excited by earthquakes, be shocked by snowstorms, get enlightened about lightning and get hands-on with hailstones! By investigating and reproducing the amazing science behind these extreme weather events, we will all become magnificent Mad Science meteorologists…
Ever wondered what it would be like to step into the shoes of Neil Armstrong or Buzz Aldrin? Well, now is your chance to find out - the Mad Science NASA Academy is in session! Discover that being an astronaut isn't as glamorous as it might sound - vac-packed dinners, specialist (very uncomfortable!) toilets, sleeping upright - it's all part of an astronaut's life up there in Space! Backed up by scientific explorations of air pressure, engineering and astronomy, this day has really got it all if you are a budding astronaut!
Put your science hats on and get to grips with the BIG questions! Why do baked beans make us trump? What makes a sunset red? Why are chillies hot? What shape is a raindrop? Why are tennis balls fluffy? What makes the sky blue? Why do onions make you cry? What is the most dangerous animal in the world? Why do we blink? How can you hear so well under water? How do rainbows happen? Why do your hands go wrinkly in the bath? We will be solving all these crazy conundrums in a jam-packed day full of scientific exploration.
Boom, tap, smack, cha-cha-cha - listen to the sounds and rhythm of the science of music. Children will feel, hear and see the ‘good vibrations’ that help create music, in all its glorious forms. By feeling the vibes and seeing the tidal waves created by a humble tuning fork, your mini Mad Scientists will get to grips with the basics of sound waves and frequencies. And by making their very own soda straw flute, jingle bracelet, dustbin orchestra and set of panpipes they will delve deeper into the realms of pitch and tone and explore how sound travels through the 3 supersonic states of matter!
